Doing the right thing...

... or doing it right now.

While most people outside of remote tropical islands can get easy access to undercoat sprays, if you happen to run out of black, dark green actually makes a very good replacement when doing a large stack of tanks.

Speaking of tropical islands and sprays, the latter have trouble with warm, high-humidity weather, which is remarkably common on the former. You can of course decide to do it anyway, instead of waiting a few months for the "dry" season, and go for the early-mid morning, where the air is the least humid, and the temperatures cool, as long as it's not actually raining, or about to rain. Which is often.

Assuming you've decided to brave the weather conditions, and you're going to have to if you want your minis base-coated this year, the common advice of testing it over some spare sprue remains crucial, if only to find the proper distance to spray, which tends to vary depending on weather conditions. You don't want that rough, grainy finish on your patiently-assembled, expensive, weeks-of-shipping-required minis, do you ?

So, as delicate as it can be to do it right, what happens when you just want to do it right now, ignore the above, and just take a chance in the 20 minutes you have before going to work ?
Well, you could manage the perfect base-coat, with a nice smooth finish, or as I just did earlier, get that dreaded grainy finish, and lots of cursing and swearing.

Fortunately, as long as it's not too bad, and you're working on minis with large flat areas, like say, tanks, a light, gentle sanding with very fine grit will smooth things out nicely, and leave you with a wonderful, flat, ideal base-coat you just want to paint over immediately.

I was able to do a little building this week-end, and I now have the better part of a US tank company operational.
Who knows, the new tanks might even get some paint before this saturday's FoW meeting !

... It's amazing just how more aggressive Shermans look, with the hedgerow cutters installed.

As the goal was to start something in september, it's certainly been reached, and I will shamelessly congratulate myself for it.
Yeah, that was merely undercoat and a quick splash of olive drab. So ? Bring it on, october !

So... It's been a bit, yeah.

I haven't been completely idle, and doing too many things at once, first of all, if you're looking for a good, useful undercoat spray, stay away from Vallejo sprays.

That's two Shermans wasted.

On the bright side, I'm happy it's only two Shermans wasted, I have a few spare anyway, I would have been considerably more annoyed if it was my Abrams instead.

Last, and definitely not best, just so I could say I did something 40K, I've finished a Carnifex I had lying on the desk for a while.
So, what happens when the hive mind messes up ? Well, you get a Fubarnifex.
It's likely the sprues didn't have time to cool properly since the shell and vents didn't fit at all, and the legs joints are warped, making for a very unbalanced, awkward pose. It looks the part from afar though, and should be the perfect expendable paint training piece.

Note how the hooves don't fit flat on the base. They're not even remotely parallel, either.

The vents are completely misaligned, and you can see how the back shell profile is different from the rest of the body

 Donc, Me voilà ! Mais j'ai des excuses. En ce moment j'ai beaucoup de travail :

Mais pour autant, je n'ai point feignanté. Remember my dears fellows, lors de ma dernière missive j'avais transmis ces quelques photos de mon brave "piou-piou crash test" :

 

Ce résultat, somme toute très modeste, a été obtenu en suivant à la lettre les recommandations de la "maison mère" du jeu Flames of War. Or çà, m’étant outillé d'un livre d’uniformologie reconnu et recommandé, je trouvais ceci :

Quelques couleurs donc pas très synchro : cuir des cartouchières, sangle et étui à masque à gaz (1 sangle), musette (2 sangles : celle portée sur le coté sur le modèle). Attention ! Sur la figurine et le modèle, l'étui à masque à gaz et la musette alias "tape cul" sont inversée.

Quant à la couleur du l'uniforme, même les spécialistes en uniformologie s'étripent encore sur la "vraie couleur" : de "jaune moutarde" à "brun beige" en passant par "marron kaki" et "terre mat"... un manque d'uniformité dans les capotes serait donc très crédible...

Admirons au passage l'esthétisme, le bon gout et le raffinement du casque modèle 1926,  de la capote modèle 1920 avec boutons camouflés, pantalon mod. 1938 (dit "golf"), bandes molletières mod. 1917, cartouchière mod. 1935/1937, musette et masque à gaz 1935. 

En 1939, l'armée française était fin prête pour celle de 1914 et en 1914 pour celle de 1870...

Mais trêve de digression antinationale.

J'ai donc repeint ma figurine en essayant, avec les pots que j'ai sous le pinceau, de corriger cela :

J'ai toujours un souci avec la couleur de l'étui à masque à gaz, pas assez "jaune caca d'oie" pour moi. Mais manque de pot, faudra faire des mélange, et j'aime vraiment pas ça.

Sur ce "olds beans" je vous dis à bientôt pour d'autres aventures...
